Which Door are you Opening this Weekend?

Aberdeen Doors Open Day is back with loads to see and do on its 30 year Anniversary weekend!

With a full programme of over 50 buildings open to the public, Doors Open Day (Aberdeen) is back this weekend! The festival which first ran in 1994 sees organisations and volunteers offer free access to sites across Aberdeen City. Visitors will be welcomed in to uncover hidden gems and experience famliar places with fresh eyes.

Running over the 7th and 8th September, there’s an exciting programme of events and activities in 2024, including the nostalgic Art Deco Bon Accord Baths where visitors can hear about the project and its progress, Station House Media Unit (shmu) who will be running creative music, radio and podcast taster sessions and The Belmont Community Cinema which will be displaying the architect’s visualisation for the refurbishment. NB. Booking may be required in advance at some properties. On Saturday 7th a step-on-step-off  bus will be running a circular route from Union Terrace, leaving on the hour at 10am through to 2pm.

Volunteer Regional Coordinator, Seonaidh Baker said: “Doors Open Day has had a presence in Aberdeen for 30 years now and it is always such an interesting and exciting weekend of discovering new places and returning to more well-known iconic buildings that are immersed in history. This year there will be a free bus running a circular route and with over 50 venues participating, there is something for everyone!”

Director of Scottish Civic Trust, Doors Open Days national coordinator, Joe Traynor, said: “Doors Open Days offers visitors the opportunity to play ‘tourist’ in their own town for free, as they uncover new experiences and revisit old favourites right on their doorstep. This year, we hope our visitors take this opportunity to make new memories with their friends and families, while they celebrate the stories that have shaped Scotland.’’

Aberdeen City Heritage Trust, which is supporting the event again in 2024 with a grant from the City’s Common Good Fund said: “Doors Open Day (Aberdeen) first ran  in 1994. Thirty years on, it remains a key calendar event that draws attention to Aberdeen’s  architecture and the people and communities that use and look after some of Aberdeen’s finest historic buildings.”
