Fresh £450,000 fund for Union Street

Aberdeen City Heritage Trust is now accepting applications for grant for Union Street (West of Bridge Street)

As part of the ongoing delivery of the Aberdeen City Centre and Beach Masterplan, fresh funding from Aberdeen City Council is allowing the Trust to extend coverage of its discretionary Building Repair Grants on to part of the City’s Granite Mile.

£450,000 cash  over three years (£150,000 per year) will support more repair and restoration of traditional roofs, chimneys, rainwater goods and traditional shopfronts adding to the considerable investment delivered through the Union Street Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme.

Meanwhile, the Trust continues to accept applications for support for building repair projects in the Bon Accord/ Crown Street and City Centre Conservation Areas using funds received from Historic Environment Scotland.

Trust Chair , Craig Wilson said: “The Trust welcomes additional support from Aberdeen City Council to help deliver vital external repairs to the built heritage of Union Street. The Trust has a twenty year track-record of collaborating with Historic Environment Scotland and Aberdeen City Council and looks forward to continuing support for our work in the repair and restoration in Union Street and the City Centre.”

Aberdeen City Council Finance and Resources committee Convener Alex McLellan said: “The Council is investing millions of pounds in Union Street through the City Centre and Beach Masterplan, the Union Street Empty Shops Grant Scheme, an events programme bringing people to the area, and improving the beautiful and historic granite buildings through the Building Repair Grants.

“We look forward to working with Aberdeen City Heritage Trust for the new Grant scheme and seeing the improvements it brings to the city centre.”

2024 marks the 20th year of the incorporation of Aberdeen City Heritage Trust. It has assisted with the repair of over 265 buildings across the City with a focus in recent years on Aberdeen City Centre in support of the delivery of the Aberdeen City Centre and Beach Masterplan.
