James Gibbs: Aberdeen’s Forgotten Son?

Aberdeen City Heritage Trust Virtual Annual Lecture 16 November 2022, 7pm

In the history of architecture James Gibbs is widely recognised as one of Britain’s most important figures in the early C18th. He is perhaps best known for St Martin-in-the-Fields church off Trafalgar Square, London or the Radcliffe Camera in Oxford. In Scotland, the West Kirk of St Nicholas is probably the only example of his design that survives.

Gibbs was born, brought up and educated in Aberdeen. Come and find out more about Gibbs and his life at the Trust’s Annual Lecture 2022.

Our Speaker: William Aslet

William is currently in the final stages of a PhD on the architecture of James Gibbs, which he is writing at the University of Cambridge, where he also completed his Master’s. His first degree was in History at the University of Oxford. He has published on Gibbs’s architecture and also on Elizabethan portrait miniatures in publications including Apollo, the Burlington Magazine, and Country Life.
